TIM KLEIN

Tim is a Brisbane painter with a creative practice developed over four
decades. Scrawled across his palette is a key message to himself
–“make the art I want to see”. Following his nose, drawing inspiration
from many sources, his work is always personal and relational; and
typically narrative and gestural. Common themes are connection,
ancient myth, and inner journeys, often explored with playful humour.
Typically unplanned the works are built in layers – usually beginning
with pencil scribbles followed by layers of oil and cold wax. Tim’s
palette embraces colour, bright but rarely unnatural. Motifs in a
symbolic language appear and reappear in his painting linking pieces
into a coherent body of work. Textural and symbolic, Tim’s works
invite contemplation and interpretation inviting the viewer to find their
own story in each piece.

BIOGRAPHY

Tim was raised on the NSW mid north coast. Key influences were the beach and bush and the family home filled with books, history and religious iconography. After completing studies in psychology he moved to West End Brisbane where he established his first painting studio. During the 90s Tim exhibited in multiple group and solo shows, and working as a community artist he helped establish the “Starving Artist Market” events, youth arts festivals and countless creative workshops across South East Queensland. Completing further study, he began practicing as a psychologist. In the studio, Tim focused on honing his craft as a painter completing private commissions but refraining from exhibiting his work. Tim returned to showing publicly again in 2023 as a finalist in the Royal Queensland Art Society’s Brisbane Portrait Prize Salon de Refuses. In 2024 his work was highly commended as a finalist in the RQAS Abstraction exhibition. In 2025 Tim was a finalist in the Milburn Landscape Prize.

Tim is represented by Revival Art Design with whom he has had multiple showings.
