“These colour newsprint collages belong to a larger body of work called Urban Myths, which explores the inner-city landscapes of Sydney. During the lockdowns, at night, I often found myself staring at the patterns of my
neighbours lights across the district. The more I looked, the more the windows resembled screens – projections of anonymous lives rendered in scenes of flickering light, framed by the architecture. Part Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, part Georges Perec’s Life: A User’s Manual, this observation eventually led me to the idea of using newsprint collage to articulate these themes. Once a ubiquitous material, stacked in virtually every artist’s studio, newsprint now finds itself on the edge of extinction – an analogue relic in
a digital world.”
