MARK GAWNE
Mark Gawne is an Australian artists recognised for his unique and highly colourful artworks. Fluent in a number of genres, he is best known for his semi-abstract Australian landscapes often featuring brolgas, galahs, and other Australian birds.
An early career as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator took the artist to Cairns in Far North Qld. It was here that he fell in love with the landscape. Explorations of the FNQ outback, forests, rivers and towns inspired the artist’s early work and continue to inspire his work today. Mark has travelled through many outback regions with a 4WD that took him to remote landscapes along rarely used tracks: camping many a night under the stars, alongside rivers, creek beds or remote beaches.
The artist doesn’t paint from photographs but rather relies on memory and impressions to inform each piece. The birds and wildlife that feature in many of his works however are created using source material.
Mark Gawne moved to Fine Art painting in the mid 90’s and after featuring in a number of art prizes and publications, his career quickly took off. He went on to produce hundreds of abstract landscape works that sold in selected galleries across the Eastern States of Australia, finding their way into collections around the world.
In 2004, Mark Gawne completed his Masters at QUT) studying the German post-war expressionists and American Abstract Expressionism. He visited galleries throughout Europe, whilst painting for his Graduate exhibition. This exhibition, titled ’The Playground’ signalled a new expressive direction in the artists work.
Now based in Brisbane, Mark Gawne creates his distinctive work from his Albion studio, showing in his gallery Revival Art & Design and at the Affordable Art Fairs throughout Australia.
