Late last year, Brisbane artist Jane Thompson spent some time in the sleepy coastal town of Brunswick Heads. It was here that she saw something that became an obsession, inspiring her work over the past 6 months… The natural beauty, the serenity and simplicity of this place can soak into your bones but it was her discovery of a piano in a park, that set her thoughts racing.
This piano is important to the community, donated, maintained and available freely for all to enjoy. The public piano made the artist reflect on the things society puts value on these days…number of followers online, outward appearances of beauty and success…
With this new body of work, Jane Thompson poses some questions to the viewer. When did we stop enjoying the simple pleasures of life? Let’s live in the moment. Enjoy the beauty around us. Look up from our screens! Why can’t there be more ‘pianos’?
