Description

Since 2007, after studying a Creative Industries degree in Visual Art at QUT, Ryan has
continued to regularly exhibit both in Brisbane and interstate. He currently divides his time
between Brisbane and Melbourne.
His vivid paintings create a visual language that express non-linear narratives interweaving
personal and family stories, and themes of transformation and reinvention, with his early
Catholic influence finding his work permeated with biblical overtones and gnostic influence.
His work often draws heavily from the Australian Gothic tradition and mid century Australian
expressionist painters. His inclination toward a bold and gaudy palette creates a haunted
psychedelic aesthetic where such visual icons such as the 1971 film Pink Narcissus and Andy
Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable meet ancestral ghosts of the Irish/Australian diaspora,
in spiritual and dream-like spaces.
