“I am an abstract studio painter. My imagery comes from working in remote regions of Australia, most recently at Arkaroola in the far
Gammon Ranges of South Australia. I work plein air while out there, and on return I go about finding singular images from often quite complicated initial viewings. I like this distillation and purification process into abstraction. I’m looking for the energy source inside things-what makes them tick, visually and emotionally. Sometimes this arrives quite quickly, at other times after many layerings and abandoned thoughts. I’m a speed painter by necessity, finding that if I can bypass my conscious mind and all its busyness and blatherings, the answer is in plain sight. This work, Pink Moon at Renmark, was a remembered thing seen one night on the way to Arkaroola. There was a beautiful bend in the Murray River, its mirrored surface lit by a full moon. The deep blue of the water and the sky was indivisible; everything was saturated and made one by
this sonorous colour.”
