Artist bio: Joanne Kerr

Joanne graduated from the Queensland College of Art, majoring in printmaking and painting. Spanning many decades Joanne’s art practice has been mostly conducted in conjunction with her family life, work as a Secondary Art teacher and her employment in schools. Since 2012 its pace has accelerated with her retirement from teaching. A current member of the Half Dozen Group and CQ Contemporary Artists, Joanne has exhibited in Brisbane and Regional Gallery spaces both as a visiting artist and as a participant in an Art Award or Competition.

This series of works are taken from sketches done while travelling the roads of Queensland

and Australia. Some are major highways while others are dirt backroads, but the quick

sketches have an expressive freedom, not unlike that of gesture drawing. Upon this

framework, colour is layered to move the landscape across the canvas.

By combining several sketches together, I focus on the overall journey as the road unfolds

before me.  I take these sketches as individual points of time and blend them together to

form a new and altered view of the entire journey. Like life, where the present moment and

events seem long but hopefully when viewed from the future will be just a series of points

in time. Colour used is often a reflection of emotions and feelings but also can be dictated

by the roadscape itself.
